I was still stunned as I tried to regain my focus through my tear filled eyes, Standing there staring at my grandfather‘s empty bed at his home. He had just passed away days before and now we all gathered at his home for our final respects. I was only 13 and for the past five years, my grandfather had been sick, lugging an oxygen tank wherever he went and covering his trach with his finger to speak. I had spent many enjoyable weekends here (not missing many) taking care of him while my grandmother worked as a nurses aid at the hospital. Truth be told, we were taking care of each other, but he always made sure to let me know how important I was. This Friday the phone wouldn’t be ringing with my grandfather on the other end asking “where is my nurse, will she be here this weekend? “
Years went by, I thought fondly of my grandfather often. When my high school counselor asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. It was a no-brainer, “well a nurse of course,” I would reply. The day that I finally reached my goal, I embraced it and announced to my friends and family that this could not have been possible without my grandfather‘s kind, encouraging words “where is my nurse Will she be here this weekend? “. My grandmother stood proudly in the crowd with tears in her eyes “grandma,” I proclaimed, “I dedicate this degree and all the hard work that came from it to my dear Grandpa, there were times when it was really hard, so hard that I wanted to quit, but I always had Grandpa in my ear saying “where is my nurse, will she be here this weekend? “
The years that I have been a nurse have been very rewarding and I’ve affected many lives in positive ways, but the day that I first did home health care is the day that I knew where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to be doing. It felt as natural to me as being a mother to my children. This is when I knew how important it was for my grandfather to know “where is my nurse? Will she be here this weekend? “
Like beautiful butterflies go through their lives serving purposes at every stage, my grandfather was able to serve his purpose with his nurse by his side. I’m not sure if my grandfather ever knew the impact and the importance that he had on a little 13-year-old girl, But now as I stand here today, I see it so clearly. Although the changes in life are hard, without change there wouldn’t be butterflies. And I just want to say “Grandpa, thank you for being my angel, I’m here and yes, your nurse will be there this weekend!”
In loving memory of William Benjamin Staggs
